From transitioning to solids to managing dysphagia, we support every feeding journey. This includes working with newborns and infants who are struggling with breast or bottle feeding, teaching skills and techniques to support the introduction of solid foods, and addressing motor and/or sensory skills to support safe swallowing and the ability to eat & enjoy a wide variety of foods. We have experience working with babies and kids moving from tube feeding to oral nutrition.

More Information

What is weaning?

We often think of weaning as stopping breastfeeding/milk feeding. Traditionally and around the world, weaning describes the whole process of introducing solid (or complementary) foods, with less reliance on milk as the primary source of nutrition over time. We help babies develop the skills needed to enjoy solid foods so they can eat safely and efficiently. We also help with strategies for dropping milk feeds and learning to drink from cups.

Who provides services?

Licensed speech pathologists (who are also certified lactation counselors) with 20+ years of pediatric feeding and swallowing experience. We have worked with children from birth through adolescence in the hospital, outpatient clinic, home health and school settings. We use evidence-based approaches that support children in developing feeding skills and expanding their diets without experiencing pressure or distress. Eating requires skill, but mealtimes are also social events, so you will see your therapists eating with the kids, both to demonstrate the skills needed to move food around in the mouth and to create an environment of safety and curiosity around trying new foods.

What is ARFID?

Avoidant Restrictive Food Intake Disorder is an eating disorder that results in a person limiting their food intake (volume and/or variety). Unlike other eating disorders it’s not related to body image. People with ARFID generally fall into 3 groups that can overlap: 1) sensory sensitivity, 2) low appetite / limited interest in eating, 3) fear of negative consequences (like choking or vomiting). A multi-disciplinary approach to treatment is warranted. Our therapists have completed additional training to become knowledgeable about specific treatment approaches that are effective.

What is a pediatric feeding disorder?

Pediatric Feeding Disorder (or PFD) is an impairment in oral intake that is not age-appropriate. It is associated with medical, nutritional, feeding skill, and/or psychosocial dysfunction. While some “picky eating” can be typical in childhood, PFD is not just picky eating. It requires skilled intervention and family support. Our therapists are experienced in treating the feeding skill domain of PFD and in working together with other professionals (like doctors and dieticians) to address the other domains that may be impacting feeding.

What is a dysphagia?

Dysphagia is difficulty swallowing. It can result from problems in the mouth, throat or both. It can be the result of differences in anatomy, muscle tone, or coordination caused by different medical conditions. Dysphagia can increase a person’s risk of choking or having food & liquids fall into the airway (aspiration). Some people with dysphagia are on modified diets or have feeding tubes to help them get nutrition safely. Our therapists have experience working with babies and kids to safely advance their diets and wean from tube feeds.
